Plans to create 'Olympic' cycleways in and around Weymouth – the venue for sailing events at the 2012 Games – have been criticised by local cyclists.

Campaigners say the four new bike routes, part of an £850,000 Olympic Legacy Cycle network package funded by the Local Transport Plan, are only good for transporting people from park and ride sites.

German rider Matthias Kessler is in a serious condition in hospital with severe brain trauma following a crash said to be caused by a cat.

Kessler, an Astana rider before his suspension for blood doping in 2007, was training in Mallorca when a cat ran into his path. He was taken to the San Dureta Hospital in Palma.

The 30-year-old's ban ended last summer but at the time of the accident he had not found a new team. Kessler underwent surgery on Friday but as yet, no results about the extent of his injuries have been released.

Lance Armstrong - Tour Down Under 09

The latest in a series of impromptu rides announced by Lance Armstrong via Twitter saw more than 5,000 cyclists bring part of Adelaide to a near standstill.

Even Armstrong, who has organised similar rides in Los Angeles, Glasgow and Dublin, was staggered by the result of his Tweet.

"I personally don't think that anyone will top the turnout we had today. That was a huge amount of people," Armstrong told Australian journalists.
