Cycle jackets are usually longer at the wrists and at the back – a “dropped tail” – to keep those areas protected in the cycling position.
Your cycle jacket is best made of a breathable fabric such as Goretex or eVent to let your perspiration escape. A non-breathable cycle jacket will soak you in your own sweat – very, very unpleasant!
My favourite cycle jacket has zips at the armpits to ventilate and help make it comfortable to wear all day in all conditions. Different jackets use different methods to provide ventilation.
A lightweight breathable waterproof cycle jacket will do you for most of the year. You’ll need something a bit thicker for autumn/winter cycling or use the layering system.
Tests have shown the Endura Venturi jacket to be the best performing cycle jacket in terms of waterproofing and breathability.
For the cycle-commuter or cyclist on a budget, the Endura Gridlock and Altura Nevis are both good value-for-money waterproof breathable cycle jackets.

A good pair of padded cycle shorts will let you stay in the saddle all day if you want to.
The best lycra cycle shorts are constructed from more panels of fabric than the cheaper shorts – e.g. you’ll see 6 panel cycling shorts or 8 panel cycling shorts etc. This allows them to fit to your shape more easily.
If you feel self-conscious in clingy Lycra, buy a pair of baggy padded cycle shorts – cycle shorts available in baggier, more conventional designs but still with the added comfort of padding for cycling.
Ladies cycle shorts have a different padded section to men’s shorts.

I’ve been using one of these Gore Countdown Paclite Cycling Jackets since late summer.
The Gore Countdown Paclite Cycling Jacket is lightweight, breathable and completely waterproof. It is simple, light and will fit easily in a pocket.
Goretex Paclite fabric is a very thin breathable laminate. This makes the jacket lighter and easier to stow than more normal 2 or 3 layer breathable garments, making the Gore Countdown perfect for the lightweight cyclist.
There are stretch Gore-Tex panels on the sides and arms for a snug fit and maximum comfort.
As the Paclite material is very thin, the Gore Countdown makes a great summer waterproof jacket.
In winter, you’ll need a base-layer and something like a long-sleeved winter cycling jersey underneath.
WhatMTB gave the Gore Countdown Paclite Cycling Jacket 9/10 although it seems perfectly suitable as a road cycling jacket to me.

The Specialized BG Sport MTB Cycling Shoe is a rigid-soled MTB cycling shoe. The BG Sport shares the same rigid plastic sole as the more expensive Specialized BG Comp (minus the football studs). There are the standard 2 holes for cleat fitting and a fairly aggressive tread for grip off the bike.
I’ve been using a pair of Specialized BG Sport MTB Cycling Shoes for a couple of years now and for the price, they’re great!
Great for recreational MTB’ing, touring or even as a beginners mountain bike or cyclo-cross race shoe – the Specialized BG Sport is certainly rigid enough.
Large mesh panels give the BG Sport shoe great breathability for warm days. The feel of air moving around your toes is quite delicious!
